However, a Pakistani LLB degree alone does not automatically allow you to step into a courtroom in London or New York. You need an additional bridging qualification. Let's explore the two most popular routes for Pakistani law graduates.
1. The United Kingdom: Becoming a Barrister
The UK is the most popular destination for Pakistani law students. If you have an HEC-recognized Pakistani LLB, you do not need to do a full law degree again in the UK. You have two main pathways:
Pathway A: The Bar Transfer Test (BTT)
If you are already an enrolled Advocate in Pakistan with some practice experience, you can apply directly to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) in the UK for the Bar Transfer Test. This test bridges the gap between Pakistani law and UK law. Once you pass, you are called to the Bar!
Pathway B: The Bar Training Course (BTC)
If you are a fresh graduate, you can apply for a Bar Training Course (formerly BPTC) at a UK university. This is typically a 1-year vocational course. Upon completion, you join one of the four Inns of Court (like Lincoln's Inn) and are officially called a Barrister.
The "Prestige" Factor
Many students complete their Bar-at-Law in the UK and return to Pakistan. Being a "Barrister" adds immense prestige to your profile in the Pakistani legal market, allowing you to charge premium fees and fast-tracking your reputation in the High Courts and corporate sectors.
2. The United States: The LLM and Attorney Route
The US legal system is slightly different, but the financial rewards of becoming a licensed US Attorney are massive. Because the US system is a "Juris Doctor (JD)" system rather than an LLB system, you have to take a specific route.
You must first enroll in a 1-year Master of Laws (LLM) program at an American Bar Association (ABA) approved university in the USA.
After your LLM, you become eligible to sit for the State Bar Exam. Once you pass, you are officially a licensed Attorney in that state.
⚠️ The State Rule Warning
Unlike Pakistan, law licenses in the US are state-specific. Not all 50 states allow foreign-trained lawyers to sit for their bar exams, even with an LLM. The most popular and accessible states for Pakistani students are New York (NY) and California (CA).
