HEC LAT FAQs: Everything You Need to Know in 2026

📅 Updated: March 2026 ⏳ 12 min read

🎯 Quick Summary

Every testing cycle, students flood our WhatsApp inboxes with the exact same doubts. "Can I use a blue marker?", "What if I fail?", "Do I need my FSc result first?", "Is there an age limit?"

To put your mind at ease and help you focus purely on your studies, we have created this ultimate, expanded HEC LAT FAQ database for 2026. Let's bust the myths and look at the official rules.

1. Exam Hall & Paper Rules

Q: Is there any negative marking in the LAT?

No. There is absolutely no negative marking in the HEC LAT. You should attempt every single MCQ. If you don't know the answer, make an educated guess. Do not leave any bubble blank on your answer sheet.

Q: Can I use a pointer, marker, or gel pen?

For the Bubble Sheet (MCQs): You MUST use a Black or Blue Ballpoint pen. Pointers and markers will bleed through the paper and ruin the optical scanner's reading.

For the Subjective Section (Essay): You can use a marker for headings and a pointer/ink pen for writing, but a standard ballpoint is highly recommended to avoid ink smudging if you sweat.

Q: What is the total time given for the test?

You are given exactly 120 minutes (2 Hours) to complete the entire test. This includes 75 MCQs and the 25-mark subjective portion. Time management is critical, as most students fail to finish their essays in time.

Q: What documents do I need to bring on test day?

You must bring a printed copy of your Roll Number Slip (downloaded from the ETC portal), your Original CNIC (or Original B-Form along with original Matric/FSc result card with picture), a clipboard, and blue/black ballpoints. No mobile phones or smartwatches are allowed.

2. Language & Subjective Section

Q: Can I write the Essay in Urdu and the Personal Statement in English?

Yes! You are completely free to mix languages between the two questions. You can write your Essay in Urdu and your Personal Statement in English, or vice versa. However, do not mix languages within the same essay (e.g., using Roman Urdu or English words in an Urdu essay).

Q: Does writing in English get you more marks?

No. This is the biggest myth in LAT preparation. The examiner checks for structure, grammar, and relevance. A grammatically perfect Urdu essay will always score higher than a broken, misspelled English essay.

Q: How long should the Essay and Personal Statement be?

The HEC officially demands a maximum of 200 words for each question. This usually equates to about 1.5 to 2 standard answer sheet pages. Do not write unnecessarily long stories; stick to a clear 4-paragraph structure.

3. Eligibility, Attempts & Results

Q: Do I need my FSc/FA result to apply for LAT?

No. You can apply for the LAT while you are still in your 2nd Year (Part-II) or waiting for your final board results. You simply select the "Result Awaiting" or "Hope Certificate" option on the ETC portal.

Q: How long is the LAT result valid?

Your LAT result card is valid for exactly 2 years from the date the result is officially declared by the HEC. You can use it for multiple admission cycles within that timeframe.

Q: Is there an age limit to take the LAT?

No. The HEC has not set any upper age limit for taking the LAT test itself. However, keep in mind that public universities (like Punjab University) have strict age limit policies (usually 24 years) for regular morning LLB admissions.

Q: How many times can I attempt the LAT?

There is no limit on attempts. You can take the LAT as many times as you want to improve your score. Universities will accept your highest valid score when calculating your merit aggregate.

4. Registration & Fees

Q: How much is the LAT fee and how do I pay?

The official fee is typically PKR 1,800 to 2,000 (subject to slight HEC changes). You must generate an invoice on the ETC portal and pay it via the 1Link / Kuickpay system using EasyPaisa, JazzCash, or any banking app. Do not use direct bank challans anymore.
